How to make dog treats that don’t crumble and are hard enough for chewing?

The treats I’ve baked crumble easily, my dog gobbles it up in no time. How can I make a longer lasting one that she has to chew on for a while?

My partner bakes treats for our dogs that they love and are far cheaper than anything we buy. They don’t crumble and get chomped down in an instant.

I think the recipe is something like this:

2 cups of rice flour
1 cup of plain rolled oats
1 cup of cheese low fat grated tasty cheese
1 sprinkling of garlic powder
enough water to form a dough (approx 1 to 2 cups)

Roll it out to a thickness of approx half a centimeter, cut into desired shapes and bake until cooked (approx 10 to 15 minutes at 180 to 200 degrees C), allow to cool and store in an air tight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Another hit recipe for our dogs is something like this:

2 cups of rice flour
2 large table spoons of low fat smooth peanut butter
2 small tubs of apple puree

Method:
Warm peanut butter in the microwave until it is soft and easy to use. Stir in the apple puree then gradually add flour. Combine ingredients to a dough consistency and bake and store as per the above recipe.

Use rice flour because it is gluten free and wheat flour can give dogs a bloated stomach.

These recipes are also good because they are dairy free.

Grated carrot can be added to the cheesy ones for variety.

Our dogs love these so much that they’re often impatient and keep heading to the kitchen while they’re cooking.
