A Doberman Pinscher Dog Lover – Are You One?

 

I was still nine years old and still not yet a dog lover when moving day came and we went to live in a different part of the Island. We moved from where my grandparents were, leaving all the animals and dogs behind. Dad knew how much my sisters were fond of the dogs but it took us a little while before we got a dog of our own.

 

 

Little did I know that down the road we would not only get one dog but two Doberman pinschers.

In the new neighborhood one of the neighbors around the corner had a pure bred Doberman pinscher. That was a beautiful dog! Its ears were up and shaped and the tail was bobbed, you know, the typical Doberman pinscher look. The color of the dog was a reddish but amber color and the eyes were the same color as its coat. He was not only beautiful but obedient and very well trained. The only time that dog displayed any kind of aggressive behavior was if someone tried to go into his house or yard unannounced.

 

Every evening Allan’s owner would take him for a walk on our street and we would see him practicing some of his dog training techniques. We were so impressed and taken back because of Allan’s good, obedient behavior. I remember the owner would drop the leash and commanded the dog the sit and stay while he walked across the street to speak to my dad and Allan the dog never moved. He stayed until his master came back to him after his long hearty conversation. My family was really impressed because the dog’s owner seemed to know the secrets to dog training.

 

I guess my dad was so awed by Allan he decided to get us a Doberman pinscher. We called our dog Prince, and he was a handful. He was disobedient and playful and walking him was near impossible because he walked us. Soon dad took on the task of training Prince and that was something to watch as he did it in the front yard. Our dog had a mind of his own, telling him to sit, stay or fetch was like telling him to run around even though he was a good, sweet dog.

 

My dad was in the Coast Guard at home in the Islands; they seemed to have the best chefs because their food was always delicious. Somehow dad always managed to bring home some of that great food for Prince. So needless to say the dog was so spoiled he did not eat dog food. If dad did not bring home a special “doggy” bag, his food was specially cooked and prepared a certain way. There were times when dad had to stay-in and work overnight, on those nights he sent home Prince’s food by one of the Coast Guard vehicles.

 

Dad’s persistent dog training techniques eventually paid off and our Doberman pinscher became a well trained, obedient dog and the transformation was incredible. A few years later we acquired another Doberman, she was black and her name was Princess. Well, the training began again and Princess too became such a good obedient dog.
